Hannah was lying in the house with her week-old baby (Martha) and the nurse, Mary Neff, while her husband and the other children were working or playing at some distance outside when Indians swept down on the village. They entered the house and captured the 3 occupants in view of Thomas. He rescued the children outside and carried them off to safety but had to abandon his baby and wife. The next day, after killing or capturing 40 of the other inhabitants of the town, the Indians started their march northward carrying their captives with them. Hannah saw her house in flames as she left. One of the Indians took Martha and killed her by knocking her against a tree. After tramping for days through snow, the party reached a small settlement of Indians living on an island at the confluence of the Contoocook and Merrimac Rivers, a few miles from Concord. There they halted for a few days before proceeding northward to the Chief, where the victims were told they would be stripped and forced to run the gauntlet. On the island was a young English boy who had been captured a year before and with him and Mary Neff, Hannah escaped. While the Indians were asleep, they killed ten of them. Hannah, the boy Samuel Leonardson, and Mary then started for the settlement but to have proof of the exploit, Hannah returned and scalped the 10 Indians. (She killed 9 and Samuel killed 1). They finally made their way back to Haverhill to find the rest of the family safe. Hannah and Thomas then went to Boston, where they arrived on April 21, and presented a petition to the General Court explaining the loss of all their property and Hannah's exploits. The court awarded Hannah 25 pounds and half of the sum each to Mary and Samuel. Taken from the "History of Haverhill" by G.W. Chase, 1891.
Her will was dated 1733.
